Taraba University SSANU Defies Management, Continues Indefinite Strike

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Taraba State University chapter, has rejected the resumption date announced by the university management, opting to continue its indefinite strike until its unresolved demands are addressed. This decision was made despite the Vice Chancellor, Professor Sunday Bako, announcing that academic activities would resume on Monday, January 27, 2025.

In a statement issued by SSANU Chairperson Bitrus Joseph Ajibauka and Secretary Comrade Mamki Joshua Atein, the union confirmed its decision to continue the strike following an emergency congress. The union emphasized that the strike would persist until two key demands were fulfilled: the application of the 2020 Guidelines for Appointments and Promotions of Senior Non-Academic Staff, and the immediate payment of promotion arrears for the years 2016 to 2020.

While SSANU acknowledged the efforts of Governor Agbu Kefas, the Ministry of Tertiary Education, and the university management in resolving some grievances, it insisted on the continuation of the strike until the two remaining demands were met. The union also accepted government offers regarding outstanding salaries, allowances, and Earned Administrative Allowances (EAA), with plans underway for a meeting in early February to finalize payment arrangements.

The government has committed to paying 10% of the accumulated EAA sum of N692,939,965.72, while SSANU continues to seek clarity on how the remaining 90% will be paid. The ongoing strike has significant implications for the university community, with students and staff eagerly awaiting a resolution to the dispute.

As the strike continues, the university management and government representatives are under pressure to address the outstanding issues and find a solution that meets the demands of the SSANU. The union’s determination to continue the strike until its demands are met has sparked concerns about the potential impact on the academic calendar and the well-being of students and staff.
