TCN Announces Seven-Hour Power Outage in Parts of Abuja for Critical Maintenance

Residents and businesses in several parts of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) are set to experience a temporary disruption in electricity supply as the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced a scheduled power outage to facilitate essential maintenance work at one of its key transmission facilities in Abuja.

According to a statement issued by TCN’s General Manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, the planned outage will take place on Saturday, July 4, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Katampe 132/33kV Transmission Substation.

The company explained that the maintenance exercise is part of its preventive strategy aimed at improving the reliability and efficiency of power infrastructure serving the nation’s capital.

Critical Maintenance to Enhance Grid Reliability

TCN said its engineers will carry out routine preventive maintenance on the 100MVA 132/33kV Power Transformer (TR1), along with its auxiliary equipment and associated switchgear.

The utility firm noted that such maintenance is necessary to ensure the continued optimal performance of critical transmission equipment and to reduce the risk of unexpected faults that could lead to prolonged outages in the future.

Areas to Be Affected

As a result of the maintenance operation, the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) will temporarily be unable to receive bulk power from the substation for onward distribution to customers in several communities.

Areas expected to be affected include:

Mpape and surrounding communities; Maitama; Jahi; Life Camp; Kado; Fish Market axis; Idu-Karmo and neighboring areas

Residents in the affected locations have been advised to make adequate arrangements ahead of the temporary outage.

While acknowledging the inconvenience the outage may cause households, businesses, and institutions, TCN emphasized that the exercise is necessary to strengthen the reliability of electricity supply in the long term.

“Equipment maintenance is essential to ensure continued optimal performance,” the company stated, while expressing regret over the temporary disruption.

The announcement comes as Abuja residents continue to grapple with power supply challenges and increasing dependence on electricity for domestic and commercial activities. Industry experts say regular maintenance of transmission infrastructure remains crucial to improving the stability of Nigeria’s power grid and preventing major equipment failures.

TCN assured customers that normal power supply would be restored immediately after the completion of the maintenance work on Saturday.
