Nigeria’s human rights activists face increasing persecution, intimidation and arrests for speaking out against injustice. The country’s complex political landscape, marred by corruption and religious nepotism, has created a culture where activists are targeted and silenced.
This phenomenon is not new. From Kudirat Abiola to Fela Anikulapo Kuti and Gani Fawehinmi, activists have long faced repression. Today, Femi Falana, Oby Ezekwesili, Deji Adeyanju, Aisha Yesufu, Rinu Oduala and Dj Switch continue this struggle.
Less prominent activists, like David Best and Omatshola Amuka-Pemu, have suffered silently. Amuka-Pemu, a legal practitioner, defended Christian minority and youth rights in Southern Kaduna. His activism began in 2015, exposing him to Islamic terrorist groups linked to the government.
After surviving an assassination attempt, Amuka-Pemu relocated to southern Nigeria, continuing his advocacy. Accused of fueling the 2020 EndSARS protests, he was declared wanted. Others, like Ronu, Deji and Dj Switch, faced similar ordeals.
The August 2024 #EndBadGovernance protests saw activists like Omatshola, Quadri and Gideon forced into hiding or exile, fearing arrest or elimination.
In this century of advancing democratic values, Nigeria’s suppression of human rights activism raises concerns. The targeting of activists undermines freedom of expression, association and life.
When will the persecution end?
When will the persecution end? The whereabouts of missing activists, including Barr. Omatshola Amuka-Pemu, Quadri Azeez and Gideon Ikwujomah, remain unknown.
