A significant wave of defections is sweeping through Southern Kaduna, as politicians from the region join the All Progressives Congress (APC). This movement has sparked intense debate and discussion, with many questioning the motivations behind these defections. While it’s every individual’s democratic right to align with any political party, the reasons behind these movements must be carefully examined.

Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, APC Chairman

For the people of Southern Kaduna, the ultimate goal should not be about the party itself, but about the actualization of their dreams and aspirations. The youths of Southern Kaduna are now more politically aware than ever, and they understand the difference between what is their right and what is a privilege. They are no longer willing to settle for crumbs when they deserve the full loaf.

The region has been treated like second-class citizens in their own state for decades, and this must end. The movement of politicians to the APC should not be a mere change of party affiliation; it must translate into tangible political gains for the people. If this movement does not result in negotiating political power from a position of strength, then it’s not worth it.

As our politicians move to the APC, critical questions must be asked

As our politicians move to the APC, critical questions must be asked: Will this new party concede to a zoning arrangement that guarantees Southern Kaduna the chance to produce a governor in 2031? Will they ensure that in 2027, key positions such as the Speaker of the House of Assembly, a Minister to the Federal Government, the Secretary to the Government, or the Head of Service are zoned to Southern Kaduna?

These are not mere requests; they are demands for equity and fairness. If Southern Kaduna is granted the governorship in 2031, they will reciprocate by ensuring other zones get their fair share. Zoning is not cheating; it’s a sign of political maturity and a recipe for peaceful coexistence.

This move highlights the complex web of political alliances and interests at play in Kaduna State

In fact, Senator Suleiman Othman Hunkuyi, a chieftain of the APC in Kaduna, has recently called on former governor Nasir El-Rufai to recognize and support his successor, Senator Uba Sani, as the state’s leader. This move highlights the complex web of political alliances and interests at play in Kaduna State.

Ultimately, the people of Southern Kaduna deserve their rightful place in the political landscape of Kaduna State and Nigeria at large. They must not settle for less, and their politicians must negotiate from a position of strength to ensure the region’s interests are prioritized. The time for total freedom is now, and it’s up to the people of Southern Kaduna to demand more and take their rightful place in the political arena.
