As I reflect on Governor Zulum as courageous and convicted leader, I am reminded of our first meeting at Ramat Polytechnic Maiduguri in 1986. His exceptional intelligence, unwavering faith, compassion, and humility have remained unchanged, inspiring countless individuals, including myself. Governor Zulum’s recent warning about the regrouping of Boko Haram insurgents in Borno State was not only timely but also courageous.
However, the Nigerian government’s response, conveyed by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, was both astonishing and disturbing. Rather than acknowledging Governor Zulum’s concerns and taking proactive measures to address the looming threat, the minister chose to dismiss the warning, urging Nigerians to disregard the governor’s assertion. This knee-jerk reaction raises fundamental questions about the government’s approach to national security.
Why does the government seem more reactive than proactive in addressing the insurgency? Why would a minister prioritize issuing a rebuttal rather than calling on security agencies to intensify their efforts and prepare for potential dangers? The minister’s swift response, issued while he was abroad in France, has sparked concerns about potential external influences or collaborations. Hence, the need for transparency and accountability.
The accusations of French complicity in the security malfeasance in the Saharan sub-region warrant thorough investigation. It is imperative for Nigerians and their government to demand answers and scrutinize the circumstances surrounding the minister’s statement. The sponsors of the insurgency and their collaborators must be exposed and held accountable.
Governor Zulum’s warnings and concerns deserve serious attention, rather than dismissal. His unwavering commitment to the security and well-being of his people is a testament to his exceptional leadership and as the nation grapples with the complexities of the insurgency, it is essential to recognize and support leaders like Governor Zulum, who embody the values of courage, compassion, and integrity.
