In a poignant and deeply reflective tribute, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha, CFR, has honored the memory of Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, who recently passed, marking the end of an era for a leader whose life was defined by unyielding patriotism and steadfast commitment to the nation. Mustapha’s moving words, published today, paint a vivid portrait of a man whose legacy will continue to resonate in Nigeria’s historical and political landscape.

The tribute, titled “Tribute to President Muhammadu Buhari GCFR, My Boss and Leader,” captures the essence of Buhari’s character and contributions, reflecting on his lifelong dedication to Nigeria’s unity and progress.

Mustapha, who served as SGF from 2017 to 2023 under Buhari’s administration, described the former president as a towering figure of restraint, purpose, and discipline—a patriot who believed in Nigeria’s potential even amidst its challenges.

“Indeed, from God we come, and to Him we shall all return,” Mustapha wrote, invoking a solemn tone as he mourned the loss of a leader who, in his view, “closed a long and defining chapter in Nigeria’s journey.”

The former SGF emphasized Buhari’s unwavering belief in the idea of Nigeria, a conviction that guided him through decades of service in various capacities—as a military officer, military head of state, and two-term democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023.

Indeed, from God we come, and to Him we shall all return. God Almighty forgive his shortcomings, reward his devotion, and grant him eternal rest

Mustapha’s tribute highlights Buhari’s principled leadership, noting that he “stood firm when it was easier to bend” and “held back when it was tempting to indulge.” These qualities, he argued, set Buhari apart in an era where leadership is often equated with spectacle.

“He did not seek noise. He did not chase favour,” Mustapha wrote, underscoring Buhari’s preference for substance over showmanship. Instead, the former president anchored his leadership on values, honor, responsibility, and service to a cause greater than himself.

He believed, without wavering, in the idea of Nigeria

The tribute also reflects on Buhari’s belief that Nigeria’s greatness hinges on collective integrity and sacrifice. Mustapha described him as a leader who reminded a generation that true leadership is rooted in fidelity to principle, not performance for public applause.

“He believed, without wavering, in the idea of Nigeria,” Mustapha wrote, emphasizing Buhari’s commitment to holding the nation together through periods of uncertainty, transition, and transformation.

As Nigeria grapples with the loss of one of its most consequential leaders, Mustapha’s words call for introspection. He urged the nation to draw meaning from Buhari’s life, not by romanticizing it, but by reflecting on its core message: that loving Nigeria is not a mere slogan but a lifelong commitment that demands integrity and an abiding belief in the country’s collective future.

“We are left with the sobering task of drawing meaning from his life,” he wrote, challenging Nigerians to honor Buhari’s legacy through action and dedication to the nation’s progress.

Mustapha concluded his tribute with a prayer for Buhari’s eternal rest, asking that “God Almighty forgive his shortcomings, reward his devotion, and grant him eternal rest.” The words carry a personal weight, reflecting the close professional relationship between the two men during Buhari’s presidency. As SGF, Mustapha was a key figure in the administration, overseeing the coordination of government policies and programs, and his tribute reveals a deep respect for his former boss.

The passing of Muhammadu Buhari has sparked an outpouring of tributes across Nigeria and beyond, with leaders, citizens, and international figures reflecting on his contributions to the nation. Born on December 17, 1942, in Daura, Katsina State, Buhari’s life was marked by a remarkable journey from a young military officer to a statesman whose influence spanned over five decades.

His tenure as president was characterized by efforts to combat corruption, improve security, and strengthen Nigeria’s economy, though his administration also faced criticism over economic challenges and security concerns.

Mustapha’s tribute stands out for its clarity and emotional depth, offering a perspective that transcends political divides. It portrays Buhari not only as a leader but as a symbol of resilience and hope for a nation navigating complex challenges. As Nigeria mourns, Mustapha’s words serve as a reminder of the enduring values Buhari championed and the responsibility of current and future generations to build on his legacy.

The nation now looks to honor Buhari’s memory through continued efforts to uphold the principles of unity, integrity, and service that defined his life. As Mustapha aptly put it, “To love Nigeria is not a slogan. It is a lifelong commitment.” For a country at a crossroads, these words may well serve as both a tribute and a call to action.
