Three Teenage Boys Drown in River Near Mining Site in Bauchi

A somber mood envelops Durum village in Bauchi Local Government Area following the tragic drowning of three teenage boys in a river near the Jinkiri mining site on Tuesday afternoon. The victims, identified as Habibu Mohammed, 16, Abubakar Mohammed, 16, and Zalani Suleiman, 14, lost their lives in what authorities believe was an accidental drowning.

‎The boys, part of a group scavenging for mineral deposits on the outskirts of Jinkiri village, reportedly ventured to a nearby river to swim after their work.

According to Malam Yakubu Ahmad, the hamlet head, the trio was later found unconscious in the water. Despite being rushed to the Specialist Hospital in Bauchi, they were pronounced dead on arrival.

‎“They often swam in the river after mining, but this time, their luck ran out,” Ahmad told Tgnews. “We are heartbroken.”

‎Bauchi State Police Command responded promptly, retrieving the bodies and conducting an initial examination. “No signs of violence or foul play were found,” a police source confirmed. “The boys had isolated themselves to swim, leading to this unfortunate incident.” The investigation remains ongoing.

‎Swimming in rivers and dams is a common activity among youths in rural Bauchi, particularly during the hot season. However, the absence of safety measures and rescue infrastructure continues to pose significant risks. This tragedy underscores the urgent need for community awareness and safety initiatives to prevent future losses.
