Tinubu Approves New Campus of Police Academy in Ogun,  ₦15 Billion Take-Off Grant

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the establishment of a new campus of the Nigeria Police Academy in Erinja, Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State, along with a special take-off grant of ₦15 billion to support its development.

The approval, announced on Monday, April 20, 2026, by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, aligns with the provisions of the Nigeria Police Academy (Establishment) Act, 2021.

The Act empowers the academy, currently based in Wudil, Kano State, to expand into multiple campuses across the country to enhance training capacity and modern policing education.

According to the statement, the ₦15 billion intervention fund will be sourced from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) 2026 allocation.

It is earmarked for priority infrastructure, academic facilities, student accommodation, and core training assets at the new campus.

The siting of the campus in Erinja followed recommendations from a high-level consultative meeting involving the Minister of Police Affairs, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, officials from the Federal Ministry of Education, the Inspector-General of Police, and the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC).

The meeting considered factors such as student intake capacity, funding realities, academic quality assurance, and the long-term manpower needs of the Nigeria Police Force.

President Tinubu believes the expansion will strengthen institutional governance, modernise policing education, and contribute to national security by improving the quality and quantity of trained personnel for the police force.

The Nigeria Police Academy in Wudil has served as the primary institution for degree-level training of police officers. The new multi-campus structure is expected to decentralise operations, boost recruitment and training nationwide, and address growing demands for a more professional and effective police service amid evolving security challenges.

No timeline for construction or commencement of academic activities at the Erinja campus has been provided in the statement, but officials anticipate rapid progress with the dedicated take-off funding.

This development comes as part of broader efforts by the Tinubu administration to reform and strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture through enhanced human capital development in key institutions.
