Tinubu Hails Abdulsalami as Trusted Adviser, Credits Him for Nigeria’s Democratic Stability

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has praised former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, describing him as one of his most trusted and discreet advisers whose counsel has continued to shape his leadership and strengthen Nigeria’s democracy.

Tinubu made the remarks on Saturday during events marking Abdulsalami’s 84th birthday and the public presentation of three books in honour of the elder statesman.

The President commended the former military ruler for his commitment to offering guidance behind the scenes rather than engaging in public criticism of serving leaders, a quality he described as rare in contemporary politics.

“As President, General Abubakar has been one of my best and most discreet advisers,” Tinubu said.

“He does not criticise publicly the occupant of the office he once held, but offers counsel through thoughtful memos and suggestions. I have found his advice invaluable, and I am a better leader for it.”

Tinubu noted that Abdulsalami’s approach to leadership and statesmanship has made him a respected figure across political divides, emphasizing that his advice has remained constructive and focused on national development.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s transition from military rule to democracy, Tinubu recounted his personal experience as a pro-democracy activist who lived in exile during the military era. He revealed that a personal assurance from Abdulsalami played a decisive role in his return to Nigeria and participation in the democratic transition process.

“I was one of those in exile. My decision to return and participate in the transition programme would not have been possible without a phone call that still resonates with me today,” Tinubu said.

According to the President, Abdulsalami assured pro-democracy activists of his commitment to a genuine transition programme and guaranteed their safety upon returning to the country.

Tinubu further credited the former Head of State with steering Nigeria through a critical period of uncertainty and fulfilling his promise to return the country to civilian rule within 11 months, despite widespread skepticism.

“At a critical juncture in Nigeria’s political history, General Abdulsalami Abubakar assumed leadership amid uncertainty and apprehension. He made a solemn commitment to restore democratic governance and fulfilled that promise on schedule,” Tinubu stated.

The President praised Abdulsalami for resisting the temptation to extend military rule, choosing instead to hand over power and lay the foundation for Nigeria’s Fourth Republic, which began in 1999 and remains the country’s longest uninterrupted democratic era.

He described Abdulsalami’s transition programme as one of the most significant milestones in Nigeria’s political development, noting that the former military leader placed national interest above personal ambition.

“It is on record, General, that you placed the love of country above personal interests and gains,” Tinubu said.

The President’s tribute comes amid growing recognition of Abdulsalami’s role in promoting peace, national unity, and democratic governance, both during his tenure as Head of State and in his continued service as an elder statesman and mediator in national affairs.

The event drew prominent political leaders, government officials, diplomats, and members of the public who gathered to celebrate Abdulsalami’s contributions to Nigeria’s democratic journey and national development.
