Tinubu Rejects Bill for Federal University of Education in Adamawa

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declined to give assent to the bill establishing the Federal University of Education in Numan, Adamawa State.

The decision was conveyed in a letter to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajuddeen, which was read during a plenary session on Tuesday. According to the letter, President Tinubu cited unresolved land discrepancies and constitutional issues regarding disposal rights as the reasons for his decision. Specifically, he mentioned that Section 22 of the bill accords the authority on the disposal of land to the governor, rather than the President, which is not in line with the law for federal government entities like universities.

Additionally, the proposal on the Award of Degree by the proposed institution was omitted in Section 25(b). This move has sparked interest, with some reports suggesting that the presidency did not reject the bill outright, but rather requested corrections.

The House had passed the bill last year and forwarded it to the President for assent. It remains to be seen how this development will affect the establishment of the university.
