Tinubu’s Intervention Ends Rivers Impeachment Drama: Assembly Suspends Move Against Fubara

The Rivers State House of Assembly has officially suspended its impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu.

The decision was reached during the House’s resumed plenary session in Port Harcourt on Thursday, where lawmakers adopted a motion to halt the process that had been ongoing since early January.

The impeachment move, led by the assembly under Speaker Martin Amaewhule—a known ally of former Governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike—accused Fubara of gross misconduct. Allegations included the demolition of the state assembly complex and unauthorized spending without legislative approval.

The proceedings faced multiple setbacks, including legal challenges and court interventions earlier in the year. However, the latest suspension follows direct intervention by President Bola Tinubu, who reportedly summoned key stakeholders—including Governor Fubara and Minister Wike—to resolve the feud.

Sources indicate that President Tinubu’s mediation, described as his fourth major involvement in the Rivers political impasse, played a pivotal role. Wike is said to have directed assembly members loyal to him to comply with the president’s directive, leading to Thursday’s resolution.

This development brings temporary relief to the oil-rich state, which has been gripped by tension between the governor and pro-Wike forces in the assembly. Analysts view it as a step toward political stability, though underlying rivalries may persist.
