United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc has announced the retirement of its long-serving Group Chairman, Tony Elumelu, from the board of directors, effective August 21, 2026.

The respected banker and entrepreneur, who has played a pivotal role in shaping UBA’s growth into one of Africa’s leading financial institutions, will step down after years of distinguished service.
Elumelu’s leadership has been marked by a strong focus on pan-African expansion, innovation, and creating opportunities for young entrepreneurs across the continent through initiatives like the Tony Elumelu Foundation.
In a smooth transition, the bank has appointed current Non-Executive Director Emmanuel Nnorom as the incoming Group Chairman. Nnorom’s appointment will take effect on the same day as Elumelu’s retirement, ensuring continuity and stability at the helm of the institution.
The announcement reflects UBA’s commitment to strong corporate governance and orderly succession planning. Tony Elumelu leaves behind a legacy of transformative leadership that has not only strengthened the bank but also contributed significantly to Nigeria’s and Africa’s economic narrative.
Further details on the transition and any farewell activities are expected to be shared by the bank in the coming weeks.
