According to eyewitness accounts and viral footage circulating on social media, the victim was inside a silver SUV when multiple gunshots were fired, leaving the vehicle riddled with bullets.

The graphic video shows the bloodied body of the young man slumped in the driver’s seat amid shattered windows, with a crowd of students and bystanders gathering at the scene near the iconic UNIBEN entrance arch. Smoke is visible rising from the area as people record the chaotic aftermath.

Initial reports suggest the incident may be linked to cult-related violence or a dispute, issues that have plagued parts of Benin City and the university environs in the past.

Police had not yet issued an official statement as of the time of this report, and the victim’s identity has not been publicly confirmed by authorities.

UNIBEN students and residents expressed deep concern over the safety of young people in the area, with many calling for immediate action to address recurring gun violence near campus. The university management is yet to comment officially on the incident.

This latest tragedy comes amid longstanding worries about cultism and insecurity around Nigerian tertiary institutions.

Further details are expected as investigations unfold.
