Tragedy Strikes UNIZIK as Lecturer is Fatally Shot by Suspected Car Thieves in Awka

A devastating incident occurred on Monday evening in Awka, the capital of Anambra State, as Dr. Osita Chinedu, a lecturer at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), was brutally shot and killed by suspected car thieves.

According to eyewitnesses, the assailants confronted Dr. Chinedu near the High-Tension area in Aroma, demanding his car keys. When he refused, they fatally shot him. The incident occurred around 7 p.m., and Dr. Chinedu was pronounced dead at the scene.

The university community is in shock and mourning, with colleagues expressing outrage and frustration over the senseless killing. A UNIZIK staff member, who spoke on condition of anonymity, urged caution, especially during the festive season, emphasizing that “our lives are more important” than material possessions.

The Anambra State Police Command, led by SP Tochukwu Ikenga, has yet to issue a statement on the incident. The university and the police are expected to investigate the matter and bring the perpetrators to justice.

Dr. Chinedu’s tragic death serves as a stark reminder of the escalating insecurity in the region, and the need for increased vigilance and cooperation between law enforcement agencies and the community to prevent such senseless killings.
