Tragic Loss: Nigerian Law School Student Dies by Suicide After Bar Exam Disqualification in Yola

A student at the Nigerian Law School’s Yola Campus has died by suicide following his disqualification from the prestigious Bar Final examinations. Ayomiposi Ojajuni, a 25-year-old graduate of Olabisi Onabanjo University, reportedly ingested a harmful substance in despair after learning of the decision on the morning the exams began.

Sources close to the matter revealed that Ojajuni, who had been eagerly preparing for this pivotal career milestone, was informed of his exclusion on Saturday, December 6, just as the professional certification exams commenced across the country’s law school campuses.

The disqualification stemmed from disciplinary actions taken by the institution, including multiple prior queries issued to the student for unspecified infractions. This measure barred him from participating in the exams, effectively delaying his entry into the legal profession.

Eyewitnesses described Ojajuni as visibly distraught upon receiving the news, breaking down emotionally in the moments that followed. In a desperate act, he consumed the toxic substance shortly thereafter.

Fellow students and staff at the campus quickly intervened, rushing him to the Modibbo Adama University Teaching Hospital in Yola for emergency treatment. Despite the medical team’s efforts, Ojajuni succumbed to the effects of the ingestion on Sunday morning, December 7.

The Nigerian Law School, a rigorous one-year postgraduate program essential for aspiring lawyers to qualify for the Nigerian Bar Association, has long been known for its intense academic pressures and strict disciplinary standards.

This tragedy marks the second reported suicide linked to the institution in 2025, following a similar heartbreaking case at the Port Harcourt Campus in May, where a student died amid allegations of bullying and institutional neglect.

The Nigerian Law School administration has yet to issue an official statement on the matter. Efforts to reach campus authorities in Yola for comment were unsuccessful at the time of publication. Meanwhile, friends and family of Ojajuni have begun organizing a memorial, remembering him as a brilliant, dedicated scholar with a promising future in law.
