The trailer, reportedly overloaded with passengers and livestock, lost control, spilling its cargo and wreckage across the outward service lane connecting the Secretariat to the expressway. The crash also partially obstructed the left lane linking to the roundabout under the flyover, narrowing traffic flow and grinding movement to a halt in one of Jos’s busiest corridors. Authorities have temporarily closed the affected section of the road, leaving commuters scrambling for alternate routes.

A chaotic scene as emergency responders sprang into action

Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene as emergency responders sprang into action. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Ambulance Rescue Team, alongside the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and other emergency services, worked swiftly to extract the injured from the mangled wreckage. All 14 victims were rushed to nearby medical facilities, including Plateau State Specialist Hospital, Bingham University Teaching Hospital, and Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH), where they are receiving treatment for injuries ranging from minor to severe.

Traffic officials from the FRSC and NPF remain on-site, valiantly managing the flow of vehicles to prevent secondary crashes and avert a full-blown gridlock. Vehicles exiting the Secretariat are now restricted to the left lane to access the roundabout, causing significant delays. Meanwhile, efforts are underway to clear the debris and restore normalcy to the roadway, though no timeline for completion has been announced.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, with authorities yet to determine whether mechanical failure, human error, or the precarious mix of human and animal cargo contributed to the incident. For now, the people of Jos are left grappling with the aftermath of a collision that has snarled traffic and underscored the fragility of safety on the city’s roads.

More details are expected as the situation develops.
