Troops Arrest Corrections Officer Over Alleged Arms Trafficking in Enugu

Troops of Operation UDO KA have arrested an Assistant Superintendent of Corrections over his alleged involvement in an arms trafficking syndicate operating in Enugu State.

The suspect, identified as Ekweme Clement Onyebuchi, was apprehended during a follow-up security operation conducted in Enugu North Local Government Area.

Security sources said the arrest took place at about 6:11 p.m. on Monday at Okpara Square, Independence Layout, Enugu, following ongoing investigations linked to the arrest of suspected arms dealers on June 30.

The operation was carried out by troops of the 82 Division Garrison in collaboration with personnel of the Division Provost Group as part of efforts to track down members of the alleged criminal network.

During the operation, security operatives reportedly recovered two pistols manufactured in the United States, two rounds of 9mm Luger ammunition, and a vehicle believed to be connected to the suspect.

According to preliminary findings, Onyebuchi had been identified as a key suspect in a syndicate allegedly involved in the illegal sale and distribution of arms and ammunition to criminal elements.

Military sources said the suspect and the recovered items are currently in custody while investigations continue to uncover the full scope of the group’s activities and identify other members of the network.

The arrest forms part of ongoing security operations across the South-East aimed at dismantling illegal arms supply chains and tackling the proliferation of weapons that have fueled criminal activities in the region.

Security agencies have intensified efforts in recent months to curb the circulation of illegal firearms, with authorities maintaining that those found aiding criminal groups will face the full weight of the law.
