Troops Neutralize 34 Boko Haram/ISWAP Terrorists in Borno; Six Soldiers Killed in Intense Clash

In a decisive military operation, Nigerian troops have successfully neutralized 34 Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists in a fierce confrontation at Sabon Gari Community, located in the Damboa Local Government Area of Borno State. The engagement, however, came at a tragic cost, with six soldiers losing their lives in the line of duty.

The Defence Headquarters confirmed the details of the operation in a statement issued by Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations. The incident occurred on January 4, 2025, when armed insurgents mounted on motorcycles and gun trucks launched a surprise attack on troops stationed in Sabon Gari, reportedly seeking vengeance for the recent deaths of their commanders.

Reinforcements from the Civilian Joint Taskforce and local vigilantes quickly joined the fray, successfully countering the insurgent forces despite facing an improvised explosive device that injured the vigilante commander. The air component of Operation Hadin Kai also provided critical support, conducting airstrikes to target the fleeing terrorists.

In the aftermath of the operation, military assessments revealed the recovery of substantial weaponry, including 23 AK-47 rifles and over 200 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, further crippling the insurgents’ operational capabilities.

While the military celebrated the significant blow dealt to the terrorist factions, it also mourned the loss of its personnel. “Sadly, six soldiers were killed in action. Their identities are withheld until their next of kin are notified,” the statement lamented, highlighting the sacrifices made in the ongoing fight against terrorism.
