Trump Announces End to Iran Hostilities, Signals Potential Military Move Against Cuba

President Donald Trump has formally notified Congress that U.S. military hostilities against Iran, launched on February 28, have officially terminated, just as the operation reached the 60-day threshold under the War Powers Act.

In a letter sent to lawmakers on Friday, the President confirmed that the ceasefire established on April 7 has held, ending active combat between U.S. forces and Iranian targets.

However, he emphasized that the Pentagon will maintain a robust military presence in the region to counter what he called remaining Iranian threats.

“The hostilities that began on February 28, 2026, have terminated,” Trump stated in the correspondence.

The announcement comes amid heightened international concern over the Trump administration’s foreign policy direction. Speaking at a rally in West Palm Beach, Florida, the President adopted a more provocative tone, suggesting the powerful U.S. naval fleet currently stationed in the Persian Gulf could be redirected toward Cuba upon its return.

“We’ll do it on the way back from Iran,” Trump told the crowd, referencing the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier. “We’ll have that come in, stop about 100 yards offshore, and they’ll say, ‘thank you very much, we give up.’”

The remarks have drawn sharp criticism from diplomatic observers, who fear they signal a willingness for further regime-change operations following the intense February strikes that reportedly eliminated several high-level Iranian officials, including the Supreme Leader.

Trump also highlighted aggressive U.S. Navy actions in the Strait of Hormuz, including the seizure of an Iranian cargo vessel. Describing the operation in vivid terms, he likened it to a profitable venture: “We took over the cargo, took over the oil. It’s a very profitable business.”

Since April 13, the United States has maintained a maritime blockade of Iranian ports, allowing non-Iranian vessels to pass only if they do not pay fees to Tehran — a policy that has severely restricted Iran’s maritime trade.

Despite the declared end to active hostilities in what was dubbed Operation Epic Fury, a lasting peace agreement remains elusive. Recent talks in Islamabad, Pakistan, concluded without resolution, prompting Trump to express dissatisfaction with Tehran’s latest proposals.

“Frankly, maybe we’re better off not making a deal at all,” he said, indicating that the current strategy of maximum pressure, including sustained naval enforcement, could continue indefinitely.

The conflict has inflicted significant damage across the Middle East, with reports of thousands of casualties since the initial strikes. While the White House describes hostilities as concluded, regional tensions persist, particularly concerning Iranian proxy forces.

The development marks a pivotal moment in Trump’s second term, transitioning from active military engagement in the Middle East to a posture of strategic deterrence, even as new potential flashpoints emerge in the Western Hemisphere.
