The streets are empty, with people running helter-skelter, desperate to avoid the authorities. Christiana Ukaoha, a US-based Nigerian, described the situation as “the scariest thing ever”, recounting how some people have even resorted to hiding under culverts, only to be forced out by police using chemicals. This desperate measure is a stark reminder of the dire circumstances faced by many undocumented immigrants in the US.

The situation has sparked a wider debate about the need for African leaders to focus on building their own countries, rather than relying on Europe or other foreign nations for support. With over 3,690 Nigerians facing deportation, the community is on edge, and many are calling for urgent action to address the crisis.

The Nigerian government has announced that it is monitoring the situation closely, but for now, many Nigerians in the US are living in fear of being caught and sent back home.
