Türkiye to Establish Military Training Facility in Nigeria

Nigeria and Türkiye have agreed to establish a major military training facility in Nigeria, designed as a long-term centre of excellence for capacity building and enhanced security operations.

The agreement was reached during high-level bilateral talks between Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Major General Christopher Gwabin Musa (retd.), and his Turkish counterpart, Yaşar Güler, on the sidelines of the Antalya Diplomacy Forum 2026.

According to a statement from the Nigerian Ministry of Defence, the facility will strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture amid ongoing counterterrorism and counter-insurgency challenges.

Both nations agreed that the facility will serve as a hub for advanced military training, with Türkiye providing expertise in areas such as special forces operations, counterterrorism tactics, drone warfare, border surveillance, and intelligence integration.

Nigeria will supply a temporary training site in the interim, while a suitable coastal location has already been identified for the permanent infrastructure.

Immediate steps outlined in the pact include the deployment of initial training programmes, technical exchanges on border security systems, and planning for both temporary and permanent facilities.

The partnership also encompasses broader collaboration on military technology transfer, joint defence production, intelligence sharing, and support for air and naval forces.

As part of the deal, Nigeria will send approximately 200 officers and soldiers from its Special Forces to Türkiye for advanced training in the coming weeks.

Minister Musa expressed optimism about the initiative, noting that Türkiye has allocated specific training slots and that deployments will commence promptly upon his return.

This development reflects Nigeria’s strategy to diversify its defence partnerships and build robust capabilities against asymmetric threats, including insurgency in the northeast and banditry in the northwest.

Türkiye, known for its experience in counterterrorism and indigenous defence industry, particularly in unmanned aerial vehicles, is expected to contribute significantly to modernising Nigerian military training standards.

The Ministry of Defence has described the pact as a “phased and practical” implementation framework aimed at delivering tangible improvements in Nigeria’s defence readiness.

Further details on the exact location of the facility and timelines for construction are expected to be released in the coming months as planning advances.
