The U.S. Embassy in Abuja has temporarily suspended visa appointments, urging affected applicants to monitor their emails for rescheduling details, according to an official notice from the U.S. Mission in Nigeria.

The closure applies specifically to routine visa services at the embassy, while visa operations at the U.S. Consulate General in Lagos continue without interruption. American citizen services remain available on an emergency basis and by appointment at both locations.

Applicants with previously scheduled visa interviews in Abuja are advised to check their email inboxes or their accounts on the AVITS (Applicant Visa Information and Tracking System) portal for updated appointment dates. Those who do not receive a notification should contact the embassy through the Visa Navigator for assistance.

The announcement echoes earlier temporary disruptions earlier in March 2026, when the embassy closed for routine business until March 9 due to potential protests in the capital.

Officials have not specified the exact reason for the current closure in the latest notice, but applicants are encouraged to stay updated via the embassy’s official website and social media channels.

This development comes against a backdrop of heightened global security alerts and periodic operational adjustments at U.S. diplomatic missions worldwide.
