In a startling development, U.S. prosecutors announced charges on Friday relating to an alleged Iranian plot to assassinate president-elect, Donald Trump. The announcement, made by the Justice Department, states that the plot was reportedly orchestrated by Iran’s elite military unit, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), as retribution for the death of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani.

Soleimani was killed in a U.S. drone strike ordered by then-President Trump in January 2020, an act that escalated tensions between the two nations significantly. Attorney General Merrick Garland condemned the plot, emphasizing the seriousness of the charges and the U.S. government’s commitment to protecting its leaders. “This type of behavior will not be tolerated, and we will take every step necessary to ensure the safety and security of our officials,” Garland stated during a press conference.
