The United Nations has announced that conflict-related violence in North East Nigeria resulted in the deaths of over 4,500 civilians in 2023.
David Lubari Lominyo, Head of the UN sub-office in Damaturu, Yobe State, revealed this information on World Humanitarian Day, citing the 2024 report by the UN Secretary-General on the protection of civilians in armed conflict.
The situation is particularly dire for children, with 230,000 lives
Lominyo emphasized that the protection of civilians remains a significant concern due to ongoing violence and indiscriminate attacks by armed groups. He noted that the conflict has severe security, humanitarian, socio-economic, and political impacts across Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe states.

Lominyo urged for increased funding for the lean season response to save these children’s lives. He highlighted that malnutrition and severe challenges persist in the region, exacerbated by farmers’ inability to access their farms due to insecurity.
Lominyo called on all parties involved in the conflict, including security agencies and armed groups, to halt the violence, safeguard civilian assets, and provide children with a chance to lead a full life.
He emphasized the need for immediate action to address the humanitarian crisis in North East Nigeria.
