The Adamawa Mass Education Board in collaboration with United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has inaugurated technical and vocational education training (TVET) targeting 3,000 vulnerable youths and women in Hong Local Government Area.
The training programme, developed by UNICEF and funded by the Government of Germany through KFW and being implemented by the mass education board.
Speaking at the inauguration on Wednesday, the Executive Secretary of the Adamawa State Mass Education Board, Mr Aminu Umar, disclosed that the registered beneficiaries would be taught in various trades.
He listed the trades, according to include sewing, welding and fabrication, interlocking and tiling, poultry farming, fashion design, shoe and bag making.
He commended Gov. Ahmadu Fintiri for providing enabling environment for nongovernmental organisations like UNICEF to operate and to bring programmes such for impacting on the life of children and vulnerable people in the state.
In his remark, Mr Joel Jutum, UNICEF Education Consultant, in Adamawa charged the beneficiaries to take advantage of the opportunity to acquire the skills to be self reliance.
According to him, the initiative was motivated by the wisdom in teaching people to fish for themselves rather than giving them fish that can last them for only a short time.
In his remarks, Dr Garba Umar, Commissioner for Education represented by Director Science and Technology, Yohana Audu urged the trainees to strive to ensure that they use the gains of the programme to successfully fight poverty.
Mr Silas Timothy and Amina Hamidu who spoke on behalf of the beneficiaries, thanked the state government and UNICEF for given them the opportunities and assured to make judicious use of the skills.
