A lecturer with the Modibbo Adama University, Yola Doctor Mahdi Abba has attributed the growing trend of corruption in the country to abuse of power, nepotism and ethnicity.
He stated this in a paper title “Corruption: the enemy within, a wake-up call for collective action” he presented at the 2024 General Assembly and Public lecture presentation organized by Muslim Council of Adamawa State, Yola South local government branch held at the College of Nursing and Midwifery Yola.
Doctor Abba added that other forms of corruption include bribery, embezzlement of funds, kickbacks, and extortion by force or threats, stressing that the corruption occur in government offices, corporate institutions, judicial, health care, religious leaders and traditional institutions.
The lecturer then suggested that corruption can be combatted through building, independent and accountable institutions like judiciary, Police, EFCC and ICPC among others as well as promoting transparency, encouraging whistle blower protection and use of religious institutions.
In his presentation title “the moral imperative of truth telling to people in power” Dr. Aliyu Umar Pariya with the Adamawa State College of Education Hong spoke extensively on the importance of telling the truth and its impact on the society.
Dr. Pariya who quoted some verses of the Holy Qur’an and Hadiths reminded the people on the need to tell leaders the truth for the betterment of the society.
In his speech, the Chairman of the council, Engineer Muhammad Buba Bashir enumerated some achievements recorded by the council in the preceding year, to include acquisition of permanent secretariat, Micro farming training on backyard gardening, and procurement of office furniture and stationaries.
Earlier, the chairman of the occasion, Dr. Muhammed Aminu Sulaiman, Permanent Secretary, State Ministry of Livestock and Aquaculture said the occasion was organized to x-ray achievements and challenges in the outgoing year.
He commended the leadership of the council for their foresight in organising the lecture, describing the topics as timely.
