University of Abuja Expels 28 Students, Withdraws Certificates of 15 Former Students

The Senate of the University of Abuja, now officially known as Yakubu Gowon University, has approved the expulsion of 28 students and the withdrawal of certificates of 15 former students over serious disciplinary offences.

According to a statement issued by Dr. Habib Yakoob, Acting Director of the Information Directorate, the decisions were reached at the 191st Regular Meeting of the Senate after careful review of the report and recommendations from the Student Disciplinary Committee (SDC).

The offences for which the expelled students were found guilty include threat to life and assault, examination malpractice, conspiracy, burglary, theft, cult-related activities, possession and use of hard drugs, falsification of ‘O’ Level results, and failure to appear before the disciplinary committee despite repeated invitations.

The Senate also withdrew the certificates of 15 former students who repeatedly ignored summons from the committee.

In related decisions, nine students were fully exonerated following investigations, while 33 others received official warnings for infractions such as conspiracy, hostel racketeering, and fighting.

Vice-Chancellor and Chairman of Senate, Professor Hakeem Babatunde Fawehinmi, reaffirmed the university’s zero-tolerance stance on misconduct.

“The University remains committed to providing a safe, disciplined, and conducive learning environment,” he said.

“We will continue to enforce our rules and regulations firmly and without compromise to protect the integrity of our academic community.”

The institution’s latest actions underscore ongoing efforts to curb indiscipline and maintain high standards amid concerns over cultism, drug use, and academic dishonesty on Nigerian campuses.
