UPDATE: 23 Confirmed Dead, 146 Critically Injured in Maiduguri Explosions

Tragedy struck the Borno State capital on Monday night when multiple explosions rocked key locations in Maiduguri, leaving at least 23 people dead and 146 others injured, many in critical condition, according to updated figures from authorities.

The blasts, suspected to be coordinated suicide bombings, targeted high-traffic and public areas including the entrance gate of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), the bustling Monday Market, and the Post Office vicinity.

The incidents occurred around evening hours, sending residents into panic and reviving memories of the city’s turbulent past amid the long-running insurgency.

Surajo Abdullahi, Zonal Coordinator at the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), confirmed the casualty figures to news outlets, stating that a total of 169 victims were evacuated to medical facilities across Maiduguri. Of these: 108 are receiving treatment at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH); 20 at Umaru Shehu Hospital and 17 at Maiduguri Specialist Hospital.

Victims, including those with severe blast-related injuries, were rushed to hospitals where medical teams worked through the night to provide emergency care.

The Borno State Police Command described the attacks as suspected suicide bombings and deployed its Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team to the scenes for assessment and clearance. Spokesperson ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso assured residents that joint security operatives and emergency responders were fully on top of the situation, urging calm while remaining vigilant.

Many locals expressed shock and fear, noting that Maiduguri had enjoyed relative peace in recent years after enduring frequent attacks during the height of the Boko Haram insurgency. One anonymous resident lamented, “Everything has now returned fresh – the fear, and the gory scenes. These multiple blasts have indicated a significant surge in violence in a city that has been peaceful over the years.”

The attacks came less than 24 hours after a reported assault on a military location at Ajilari, an outskirt of Maiduguri, on Sunday night, heightening tensions in the region.

The last major incident in the city was in 2021, involving mortar fire by Boko Haram fighters that killed at least 10 people, followed by a suicide bombing at a mosque in Gamboru market.

No group has officially claimed responsibility for Monday’s explosions, though the pattern aligns with tactics previously used by insurgents in the northeast.

Security forces continue investigations, and residents have been advised to report suspicious activities while authorities work to restore normalcy. The incident underscores the fragile security situation in Borno State despite ongoing military efforts to contain extremism.
