In a heartbreaking turn of events, Hafsatu Yusuf, the Kano woman who gave birth to quintuplets at Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital on Wednesday, has passed away.

According to officials from the Kano State Ministry of Health, Hafsatu died around 1-2 a.m. on Thursday, March 26, 2026, due to persistent postpartum bleeding that began shortly after the delivery. Despite efforts by medical personnel to stabilize her condition, she could not be saved.

The delivery of the five babies — three boys and two girls — was initially hailed as a rare medical success at the government hospital. All five newborns are reported to be alive and stable, receiving specialized care under close medical supervision. The Kano State Government has reportedly taken steps to support the infants.

Hafsatu, described as a mother of eight prior to this pregnancy (with the quintuplets marking her ninth), leaves behind her husband, Salisu Nafiu (also referred to as Salisu Nufi’u or Nafiu), a commercial tricycle driver, who is said to be in deep grief.

Family and community members have expressed shock at the sudden loss, turning what began as a moment of celebration into one of mourning across Kano.

Postpartum hemorrhage remains a leading cause of maternal mortality in Nigeria, particularly in cases of multiple births, which carry higher risks of complications. Medical sources noted that Hafsatu was initially stable after the delivery but her condition deteriorated rapidly overnight.

The Kano State Ministry of Health, through its Public Relations Officer, Nabilusi Abubakar K/Na’isa, confirmed the incident, emphasizing that the babies continue to receive necessary medical attention.

This tragedy has sparked renewed calls for improved maternal healthcare infrastructure and emergency obstetric services in the state to prevent similar losses in high-risk pregnancies.

As the family prepares to bury Hafsatu, condolences continue to pour in from across Nigeria, with many praying for the survival and healthy growth of the five orphans now under state care.
