US Alerts Possible Protests in Abuja Amid Middle East Conflict

The United States Embassy in Abuja has issued a security alert warning of a high potential for protests in the Federal Capital Territory on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, linked to the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran.

In the alert released on March 3, 2026, the embassy stated that demonstrations could arise due to the current military tensions, following US combat operations in Iran and retaliatory actions. Previous protests by some groups in Nigeria have led to violent clashes with Nigerian security forces.

The embassy strongly advised all US citizens in Abuja to remain in their residences throughout the day and to avoid any protest areas. It highlighted the risk of violence and urged heightened caution.

The embassy advises citizens to take precautions in response to potential unrest. Recommendations include avoiding protest areas and crowds, exercising caution near large gatherings, and monitoring local media for updates. It’s also suggested to keep a low profile, review personal security plans, and ensure cell phones are charged.

Citizens are encouraged to carry proper identification, vary travel routes and times, and be vigilant in public places like shopping centers and places of worship. Familiarizing yourself with emergency exits is also a good idea.

The alert noted that while the Consular Sections of Embassy Abuja and Consulate General Lagos remain open, all visa appointments at the Abuja embassy were cancelled for March 4 due to the potential unrest. Applicants will be contacted to reschedule.

It encouraged US citizens to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) for security updates and to monitor the embassy website at ng.usembassy.gov.

The warning comes amid reports of earlier demonstrations in several Nigerian cities, including by Shi’ite groups expressing solidarity with Iran following strikes that reportedly killed its Supreme Leader.

Authorities have not confirmed specific danger zones beyond general avoidance of protest sites and crowded areas, but the embassy emphasized staying indoors to minimize risks.
