Vice President Kashim Shettima has condemned the recent spate of stampedes across Nigeria, describing them as a “national tragedy”. In a statement released on Sunday, Shettima expressed deep sorrow over the losses and offered prayers and heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims.
The Vice President’s comments come after two devastating stampedes occurred on Saturday, one in Okija, Anambra State, where 22 people lost their lives, and another in Abuja, where 10 people died during a Christmas food-sharing event at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Maitama.
Shettima emphasized the urgent need for improved safety measures during public gatherings, stating that the loss of life, particularly among children, is a tragedy that could have been avoided with proper planning and organization.

The Vice President assured affected families that the Federal Government would provide necessary support during this difficult period, directing relevant agencies to provide immediate assistance to those in need.
Shettima’s condolence message was echoed by concerns over the country’s worsening economic situation, which has led to increased poverty and frustration among citizens. The recent stampedes have raised questions about safety measures during charity events, with the police in Abuja announcing that prior permission must be obtained before such events are organized.
