Wailings, tears, protest as Deborah is buried in Niger

The remains of Deborah Samuel, who was lynched and set ablaze in Sokoto on Thursday over alleged blasphemy, have been laid to rest amid wailings and tears by family members, friends and church members.

Deborah was buried in her hometown,Tunga Magajiya, in Rijau Local Government Area of Niger State.

Distraught sympathisers and relations wailed and profusely shed tears, lamenting the gruesome manner of her death as she was being buried. The town’s youths also staged a protest to express their grievances over her gruesome murder by fellow students.

Her remains were buried at about 6:30pm at the Christian cemetery in Tunga Magaiya.

Tunga Magaiya, who insisted that the Sokoto State Government should bear the responsibility for her burial, almost marred Deborah’s funeral.

The protesters were, however, calmed by the deceased student’s family members who also insisted on going ahead with Deborah’s funeral.

Pastor of ECWA in Tunga Magajiya, Emmanuel Maaji, who is also said to be an uncle to Deborah, led the prayers at the cemetery before her remains were interred.
