The Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Shehu Gabam, has shed more light on the recent meeting with former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai and allies of ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar. The closed-door meeting, which took place at the SDP national secretariat, had sparked speculations about a potential political merger ahead of the 2027 elections.
According to Gabam, the meeting was centered around discussions for a better Nigeria, rather than a political party. He emphasized that there is no official statement from El-Rufai or his allies about joining the SDP. “There is no official statement from El-Rufai or any one of them about officially joining SDP,” Gabam stated.

Gabam revealed that the meeting was an opportunity for the party to engage in conversations with like-minded individuals who share their vision for a better Nigeria. “We are looking for like-minded people who believe in the future of the country, so that we can work together and uplift the individual standard of Nigeria,” he said.
The SDP Chairman noted that the party’s objective is not about forming alliances with other political parties, but rather about working towards a common goal of building a better Nigeria. “It’s not about a political party; it’s about the future of Nigeria,” he emphasized.

Gabam also disclosed that he has been receiving dignitaries from different political parties, discussing ways to stabilize the country and offer productive advice to the government. “I have received a lot of dignitaries from different political parties in the office, discussing the way forward, how to stabilise the country, and how to offer productive, progressive advice to this government so that there will not be a crisis,” he revealed.
The SDP Chairman emphasized that the party’s role is to play the part of a responsible opposition, just like the All Progressives Congress (APC) did when it was in opposition. “We don’t have any other objective other than that. So we are playing our role as an opposition party, just the way APC played its role and ousted PDP from power,” Gabam stated.

Overall, the meeting between the SDP and El-Rufai, as well as Atiku’s allies, suggests that the party is open to forming alliances and working with like-minded individuals to achieve its goals. However, it remains to be seen how these discussions will play out in the lead-up to the 2027 elections.
