‘We’ll Do Everything to Stop It’: Rivers APC Rejects Impeachment Move Against Gov Fubara

The state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has vehemently rejected the impeachment proceedings initiated against Governor Sir Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu, declaring that the party will do everything possible to prevent the destabilization of what it calls “an APC government.”

The strong rebuke came in a press statement issued on Thursday, January 8, 2026, by the Rivers APC Spokesperson, Darlington Nwauju, hours after the Martin Amaewhule-led House of Assembly formally commenced impeachment processes during plenary.

The APC leadership conceded the legislature’s independence and its constitutional role in checks and balances but described the resort to impeachment as “totally untenable.”

The party warned against allowing “an obvious hangover from strifes that occurred within the PDP” to resurface and undermine the APC in Rivers State.

“We solemnly reject the resort to an impeachment process against our Governor and his deputy,” the statement read. “Let it be known that our party will do everything possible to ensure that the Government of Rivers State, which is an APC government, is not destabilized through fratricidal disagreements.”

The impeachment move, initiated by Majority Leader Major Jack and backed by 26 lawmakers, centers largely on Governor Fubara’s alleged failure to present the 2026 budget to the Assembly, alongside accusations of gross misconduct including extra-budgetary spending and non-compliance with court rulings.

Speaker Amaewhule announced that formal notices would be served on the governor and deputy within seven days, in line with Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution.

However, the APC countered that the ongoing budget controversy is misplaced. It referenced the ₦1.485 trillion budget transmitted by President Bola Tinubu to the National Assembly during the 2025 emergency rule period, which was approved by the Senate on June 25, 2025, and the House of Representatives on July 22, 2025.

This budget, the party noted, is valid for one year until August 2026, and the governor is under no obligation to present a supplementary one if satisfied with its provisions. The Constitution, it added, permits governors a six-month spending window into a new fiscal year.

The party urged APC members in the Assembly to “resist pressures from outside the Assembly chambers” and immediately discontinue the process to avoid dragging the party’s image “into the mud” and stifling development in the state.

Governor Fubara, who defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC in late 2025, has positioned himself as a loyal supporter of President Tinubu.

The impeachment proceedings are widely seen as a continuation of the protracted rift between Fubara and his predecessor, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, whose loyalists dominate the Amaewhule-led faction of the Assembly.
