We’re Pushing for Return Tickets for 40 Senators Who Lost Primaries-Akpabio

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has revealed that the leadership of the upper chamber is actively working to secure return tickets for approximately 40 serving senators who failed to win their parties’ nominations during recent primaries.

Speaking during Tuesday’s plenary session, Akpabio acknowledged the outcomes of the primaries, which saw victories and disappointments across parties, including the All Progressives Congress (APC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC). He noted that while some senators succeeded, others — reportedly around 40 out of 105 — lost their bids ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“We are promised that we will have very few disappointments, and I do know that the Senate leader and the leadership of the Senate is working very hard towards that,” Akpabio said, extending advance congratulations to colleagues across party lines.

The statement comes amid concerns over the integrity of the primary process, with critics questioning efforts to override results through alternative means. Akpabio emphasized the broader triumph of democracy while assuring affected senators that solutions are being explored.
