Why Ex Kaduna NUJ Secretary Backs Shehu Sani’s Return to the Senate

A media consultant and public affairs commentator, Comrade Femi Adi, has thrown his weight behind the possible return of former Kaduna Central lawmaker, Shehu Sani, to the National Assembly, citing his legislative experience, advocacy record, and continued relevance in national discourse.

Adi a former Kaduna NUJ Secretary,in a statement made available to journalists, outlined several reasons he believes the outspoken politician deserves another opportunity in the Senate ahead of future electoral contests.

He noted that during his tenure in the Nigerian Senate between 2015 and 2019, Sani distinguished himself through consistent advocacy on human rights, anti-corruption, and social justice.

“While not all his legislative efforts translated into laws, his visibility and courage in addressing sensitive national issues, particularly insecurity in northern Nigeria, made him one of the most vocal lawmakers of that era,” Adi stated.

The commentator also described Sani as a “voice for the masses,” emphasizing his populist approach to governance and his tendency to align with the concerns of ordinary Nigerians rather than elite political interests.

According to Adi, Sani’s public interventions—both during and after his time in office—have consistently focused on economic hardship, governance failures, and the protection of civil liberties.

On experience, Adi argued that Sani represents a blend of activism and legislative exposure, having been actively involved in Nigeria’s pro-democracy struggles prior to his election into the Senate.

“That background gives him both historical perspective and practical governance experience, which are critical in navigating today’s complex political landscape,” he added.

Adi further described Sani’s defeat in the 2019 general elections as a “learning curve” rather than a rejection by the electorate, noting that political comebacks are not uncommon in Nigeria’s evolving democracy.

“Many politicians return stronger after setbacks, having re-strategized and built broader alliances,” he said.

Highlighting Sani’s independence, Adi pointed out that the former senator was known for challenging policies within his party when he disagreed with them, a trait he described as essential in promoting accountability in governance.

He added that Sani’s continued engagement in national conversations, particularly through regular commentary on political and socio-economic issues, underscores his enduring relevance.

“As Nigeria continues to grapple with complex challenges, the need for experienced, outspoken, and people-oriented representatives cannot be overstated,” Adi said.

The call comes amid growing political activities and alignments ahead of the next election cycle, with stakeholders weighing potential candidates capable of influencing legislative debates and policy direction at the national level.
