Wike’s Aide Faces Backlash for Leaking Voter’s Data from INEC Portal

Lere Olayinka, media aide to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has come under heavy criticism for publicly sharing a voter’s personal data obtained from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) administrative portal.

On Saturday, May 31, 2026, Olayinka took to his X (formerly Twitter) handle and posted details of Emeka Ike, claiming he was previously registered in Imo State before transferring his voter registration to the FCT on May 15, 2026. He questioned Ike’s intention to contest for a House of Representatives seat in Abuja.

The two images attached to the tweet clearly showed they were screenshots from INEC’s admin login portal (cvradmin.inecnigeria.org). The leaked information included the voter’s application number, registration centre, Voter’s Identification Number (VIN), profile picture, full name, and date of application.

Cybersecurity analyst Bro Bonaventure questioned how Olayinka gained access to the restricted portal, which is meant for INEC’s ICT department only.

“Top-level access is only reserved for key personnel in INEC,” said social commentator Chukwudi Ndubuka. “This is a serious red flag that must not be ignored… This reeks of unauthorised access, confidentiality issues and a compromised INEC.”

The action has raised concerns over possible violation of the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDPA) 2023, which requires organisations to safeguard personal data from unauthorised access or disclosure.

As of press time, neither INEC nor the FCT Minister’s office has issued any statement addressing the data leak.

The incident has sparked widespread debate on social media about data privacy, electoral integrity, and the conduct of public officials ahead of the 2027 general elections.
