Nigerian Minister of Women Affairs, Hon. Imaan Sulaiman, emphasized the crucial role women play in addressing climate change, stating that their participation is a catalyst for innovative solutions.
Speaking at the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) COP16 in Riyadh, Sulaiman highlighted the importance of investing in women, citing evidence that they invest in ways that enhance food security, increase family income, and foster community resilience.
To mitigate global warming, the Women Ministry will introduce the Women in Green Economy program next year, focusing on planting 10 million economic trees and plants, including the Nopal Cactus Cladodes.

This initiative aims to provide sustainable social and economic benefits, including income generation opportunities, empowering one million women in climate-smart agriculture, and supporting 1,000 female-owned startups involved in climate-friendly businesses.
Sulaiman stressed that women’s participation in climate action is vital, as they make up over 50% of Nigeria’s population and are responsible for over 70% of agricultural activities.
The Minister emphasized that investing in women is always a sound investment, leading to enhanced food security, increased family income, and community resilience.
