A non governmental, Centre for Initiative and Development (CFID) has observed the 2020 world patient day in jalingo, the Taraba state capital, North-east Nigeria.
The day was set aside by the World Health Organization to recognized patient safety as global health priority with the theme “HEALTH WORKER SAFETY; A PRIORITY FOR PATIENT SAFETY”.
Speaking on the theme, the Executive Director of Center for Initiative and Development CFID, Danjuma Adda, said the theme focuses on the interrelationships between health worker safety and patient safety.
He said, the covid-19 pandemic has unveiled the huge challenges and risks health workers are facing globally including health care associated infection, violence, stigma, psychological and emotional disturbance, illness and even death.
Adda, stated that working in a stressful environment makes health workers more prone to errors which can lead to patient harm.
The Executive Director also said, as a patient driven organization they need to add their voice so that all patients have the right to safety and effective health care services.
He explained that patient safety is a team effort, noting that patient caregivers and healthcare professionals all play a part and advocated for patient voice in health care decision.
Also speaking, the Chairman, Nigeria Medical Association, Taraba State chapter, Nkantau Edet commended the NGO for its stands on the world patient safety day, while he lamented that health workers are poorly paid.
