The Public Convenience Maintenance Association (PCMA) FCT chapter has reaffirmed its dedication to advancing toilet usage and promoting environmental hygiene across the six area councils of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). This commitment was reiterated in a press release issued on Tuesday in celebration of World Toilet Day.
Usman Umar, the general secretary of PCMA, called upon all stakeholders in both the government and private sectors to unite in the shared mission of improving sanitation practices in the territory. His remarks align with the global emphasis on sanitation, as recognized by the United Nations since 2013.
The association praised the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, and the Minister of State for Environment, Mariya Mahmud, for their commitment to the Federal Government’s Executive Order 009, which aims to eradicate open defecation by 2025

Umar expressed confidence in the collaboration with the FCT Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASSA) to reach these objectives.
“International organizations, particularly the World Toilet Organization, have long championed World Toilet Day to raise awareness about the critical importance of sanitation. We commend the efforts of the FCT government in this direction, but we must all work together,” Umar stated.

The PCMA also plans to continue its partnerships with regulatory bodies like the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) to combat the detrimental health impacts of inadequate sanitation practices. According to PCMA, open defecation poses significant risks to public health and environmental safety.
