EFCC's Action is Politically Motivated-Onokpasa

By Samaila Emmanuel Bzugu

Onokpasa, a lawyer and Chairman of Tinubu Media Support Group (TMSG), responded to Bayo Onanuga’s comments regarding former Governor Yahaya Bello’s alleged evasion of arrest by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Yahaya Bello, the former Governor of Kogi State, is not in hiding, nor is he evading arrest or refusing to present himself before the law, according to Jesutega Onokpasa. This comes after Presidential Spokesman Bayo Onanuga claimed that Bello was hiding “under the agbada” of his successor, Governor Usman Ododo, in an interview with Laolu Akande.

Onokpasa argues that Bello is actually in court, trying to enforce his fundamental human rights, and therefore cannot be deemed to be hiding from the law. He criticizes Onanuga and Akande for their “crass ignorance” of the law and judicial process, stating that they are not lawyers.

It’s worth noting that Bello had previously gone to the EFCC headquarters, only to be told to go home, and later had the EFCC show up at his location requesting a staged arrest. This raises questions about the EFCC’s intentions and whether they are truly seeking justice or just trying to harm Bello’s reputation.

Bello is entitled to wait for the apex court’s judgment before taking any further action, and that the matter should be left to the courts to decide

Onokpasa also accuses the EFCC of being corrupt and acting as a “political thug” for hire to politicians with scores to settle. He questions why Akande didn’t prioritize investigating the EFCC’s actions instead of spreading misinformation about Bello.

Ultimately, Onokpasa asserts that Bello is entitled to wait for the apex court’s judgment before taking any further action, and that the matter should be left to the courts to decide, rather than being tried in the court of public opinion.
