‎Professor Pate, a distinguished professor of media and society, bid a heartfelt farewell to the university community in a ceremony filled with tributes, emotions, and reflections on his remarkable achievements.

‎Smiling warmly as he addressed staff, students, and well-wishers, the outgoing VC expressed deep satisfaction with his service, stating he was “fulfilled and happy to be leaving after serving the institution to the best of his ability.”

‎Under his stewardship, FUK experienced rapid growth and became recognized as one of Nigeria’s fastest-growing universities.

‎Key milestones included significant infrastructural development, enhanced academic standards, expanded research opportunities, improved staff welfare, and the establishment of critical programs such as the College of Medical Sciences and advancements in the university’s radio station.

‎His administration also successfully resolved longstanding legal challenges, fostering a stable and progressive environment for learning and innovation.

‎A towering figure in mass communication, Professor Pate’s influence extends far beyond administration. Born on January 4, 1964, in Adamawa State, he began his career as a graduate assistant at the University of Maiduguri in 1988 after earning his Bachelor’s in Mass Communication (1987), followed by an M.Phil from the University of Ghana, Legon (1990), and a PhD from Maiduguri (1997).

‎He rose to full professorship in 2007 and held key roles, including Dean of the Faculty of Communication at Bayero University Kano and President of the Association of Communication Scholars and Professionals of Nigeria (ACSPN).

‎His contributions to journalism education; such as unbundling Mass Communication curricula into specialized programs, securing international grants, and advocating for ethical, investigative reporting—have shaped generations of media professionals. Many credit him with instilling core values of integrity, discipline, and lifelong learning.

‎In a glowing tribute, Mr. Tom Garba, publisher of Tgnews, described Professor Pate as an “icon” whose impact “cannot be ignored.” Garba, who credits Pate with molding him personally and professionally, wrote: “Knowing Prof is the best thing that happened to me and my profession… His tenure at Kashere was nothing short of a concrete foundation, discipline and professionalism… As he steps out from Kashere, I wish him a bigger role in this industry to continue shaping the media industry. Prof Pate’s knowhow is such that cannot be ignored or leave; he should be quickly engaged—the media world needs him across the globe.”

‎The farewell was marked by emotional scenes, with students and colleagues visibly moved by memories of his mentorship, visionary approach, and personal touch that made FUK feel like a family. Tributes poured in from across print, broadcast, and social media platforms, celebrating what many called a “glorious exit” and a “success story” in university leadership.

‎As Professor Pate transitions from his role—succeeded by incoming Vice-Chancellor Professor Muhammad Inuwa Ja’afaru, whose appointment takes effect following the end of Pate’s tenure on February 11, 2026—the academic and media communities agree: his departure is not an end, but a call for even greater contributions on a national and global stage.

‎Professor Umaru A. Pate’s indelible mark—built on integrity, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to excellence—ensures his legacy will inspire generations to come.
