In a sharp response to former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) Babachir David Lawal’s scathing critique of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Vice President Kashim Shettima, Dr. Umar D. Duhu, pioneer National Vice Chairman North East of the APC, has urged for a more respectful and constructive approach to political discourse.

Speaking as a concerned citizen and seasoned political figure, Dr. Duhu condemned Lawal’s description of Vice President Shettima as a “flat spare tyre,” calling it uncharitable, unfair, and disrespectful to the dignity of the office. “Such personalized attacks undermine the substance of his arguments and erode the decorum expected in public discourse,” Duhu stated, emphasizing that public officials, including the Vice President, deserve respect even amid disagreements.

Lawal’s broader claims that the APC has marginalized the poor and worsened hunger and injustice were also challenged by Duhu, who labeled them as gross exaggerations.

While acknowledging the party’s shortcomings, he highlighted key initiatives under the APC-led administration, including the National Social Investment Programme (NSIP), the Presidential Fertilizer Initiative, and the Anchor Borrowers’ Programme.

“These efforts have positively impacted many Nigerians,” Duhu argued, advocating for a balanced assessment that recognizes both achievements and areas for improvement.

Addressing Lawal’s reported involvement in forming a new political coalition, Duhu welcomed his democratic enthusiasm but cautioned against actions that could deepen divisions within Nigeria’s political landscape.

“Rather than creating fissures, I urge Lawal and his associates to engage in constructive dialogue with existing parties, including the APC, to find common ground,” he said, stressing that collaboration would strengthen democracy and foster inclusivity.

In his closing remarks, Duhu reiterated the need for robust yet respectful debate to advance Nigeria’s democracy. “While I respect Babachir Lawal’s right to his opinions, I implore him to adopt a tone that promotes unity and constructive engagement,” he concluded.
